Calder in Flight
Nahmad Contemprary
February 11 – March 15 2025
Monday to Sunday, 11am – 6pm
With Calder in Flight, we are proud to welcome Nahmad Contemporary back at Tarmak22. Opening February 11, the fourth exhibition by Nahmad Contemporary at Tarmak22 presents important kinetic works by American artist Alexander Calder. Drawn from across five decades of creation, covering the 1930s, when Calder fine-tuned his techniques, to just before his passing in the 1970s, works on display illustrate the artist’s masterful manipulation of painted industrial sheet metal, wire and rods. Industrial components that in Calder’s studio in Roxbury, Connecticut became mobiles, aerodynamic forms that once suspended interplayed with the elements and gravity.
Highlights include examples of the artist’s foundational works, among them Black Disc with Flags (c. 1939) and Tic Tac Toe (1941), and more complex compositions from his mature period, including Gouvernails rouges (1967). The latest work in the exhibition is Crag with Petals and Yellow Cascade (1974).
Calder in flight is named in tribute to the artist’s fascination with aviation. As such, Tarmak22, with its unique setting by the Gstaad-Saanen Airport, makes for an intriguing backdrop. The exhibition has been conceived with Edward Enninful OBE, who has overseen its installation and contributed to an illustrated catalogue designed by Studio MDA.
